Burglar Alarms in Canterbury

Looking for a burglar alarm or intruder alarm in Canterbury?

ITD Secure is an independent, Kent based security firm designing and fitting Pyronix intruder alarm systems for homes and businesses across Canterbury, its surrounding villages and the coast. Burglar alarm or intruder alarm, it is the same system underneath, we simply size and grade it to the property and to what your insurer needs. Every system is built around how a property is actually approached and entered, not a boxed package off a shelf, which is the difference between a system that stops a break-in and one that just makes a noise afterwards.

With a 5.0 star rating from our Google reviews, and trusted by independent businesses across Canterbury and Sturry, we let the work speak for itself.

Burglar and intruder alarms across Canterbury, from Sturry to Whitstable

Canterbury is a city of real contrasts, and that is exactly why no two jobs here look the same. Inside the ring road are the period terraces and listed buildings of the old city, where any external kit has to be sympathetic and often needs consent. Around it sit the residential streets of Wincheap, Hales Place and Thanington, a large student and rented population in houses of multiple occupation, the villages of Sturry, Blean, Chartham and Bridge, then the coast at Whitstable, Tankerton and Herne Bay.

Alongside the housing is a busy commercial city, the high street and independent shops, the cathedral driven tourism and hospitality trade, and the parades of independent businesses out in Sturry and the villages. Each of those needs a different alarm. A listed city centre building wants a discreet, wireless system that does not touch the fabric, while a village shop or a coastal home needs its own approach entirely.

On the face of it Canterbury is one of the safest major towns in Kent, ranked third safest by CrimeRate, but that headline hides the one crime moving the wrong way. Burglary in Canterbury has climbed sharply, up around 180 per cent on CrimeRate’s three year index, and in April 2026 the city was recorded as the worst major town in Kent for burglary. A city that is safe on average is not the same as a safe street at two in the morning, which is when it matters. You can check the current picture for your own street on the police.uk crime map or on CrimeRate.

We know Canterbury, from a listed building inside the walls to a shop in Sturry or a home out at Whitstable, and we design around the property in front of us. The number of sensors, where they sit, the zoning and whether the system is monitored are all chosen for that home or unit, not lifted from a standard quote.

A real Canterbury job

One of our recent installs, an independent business in the old city.

An independent business in a period building inside Canterbury’s old city had been broken into overnight, the sort of narrow-fronted, older premises where the weak point is round the back, away from the CCTV and footfall of the high street. Being a listed building made it harder, nothing could be chased into the walls or fixed to the historic frontage, and the previous alarm had long since stopped working. With burglary rising across the city, it was a break-in waiting to happen.

We surveyed the building the way someone targeting it would read it, the quiet rear yard, the flat-roof access, the service door off the lane. We fitted a fully wireless Pyronix intruder alarm so nothing touched the fabric of the building, with contacts on every external door, dual-technology detection through the shop floor and stockroom and set and unset by tag for staff at close, all graded to satisfy the insurer. Alerts go to the owner and a nominated keyholder through the app, with the option of full 24/7 monitored response.

We paired it with discreet Hikvision CCTV covering the rear approach and the shop floor, sited sympathetically so it protects the premises without spoiling a historic frontage. The result is a building that is now properly covered front and back, without a single cable on show, and an owner who is no longer relying on luck.

Why Canterbury homes and businesses need an alarm

The risk profile across Canterbury is mixed, which is why a single standard alarm rarely fits. In the city and the student-heavy streets around Wincheap and Hales Place the common issues are opportunist burglary and theft from houses of multiple occupation, where a well-zoned, monitored alarm both deters and alerts before someone is inside.

Out in the villages around Sturry, Blean, Chartham and Bridge, and along the coast at Whitstable and Herne Bay, it is homes and second properties left quiet and outbuildings out of sight. In the city-centre retail, the hospitality trade and the independent shops it is stock theft and out-of-hours entry, where insurers increasingly expect a graded, professionally maintained intruder alarm. With burglary the one crime rising across the city, none of these is a risk worth leaving open.

An alarm only protects what it actually covers, at the moment it matters, which is usually at night when the property is empty. Getting the zoning, the sensor type and the response right for each of those situations is the whole job.

Award Winning Pyronix Systems

We fit Pyronix, a British manufacturer named Security Manufacturer of the Year, chosen for reliability and build quality rather than whatever is cheapest. The same platform that protects commercial sites is what we put on Canterbury homes.

Proven Criminal Deterrent

Most break-ins are opportunist. A visible, professionally fitted alarm at a Canterbury property often ends it before it starts, which is why the external sounder and signage are placed to be seen on the way in.

Graded to Your Insurer’s Requirement

Homes, shops and hospitality premises carry different insurance demands. We specify Grade 2 or Grade 3 to match what your insurer actually asks for, so the system stands up when it is needed and when you claim.

Local Kent Installer, Not a Call Centre

We are a local Kent firm covering Canterbury, the villages and the coast, so a survey or a callout is a real local visit, usually the same week. We know the difference between a listed building inside the walls, a student let in Wincheap and a home out at Whitstable, and we spec the system to it.

Protection for Staff, Stock and Premises

Across Canterbury’s independent shops, cafés and city-centre retail, a graded intruder alarm protects people, stock and the building, and supports your duty of care and insurance, with monitored response where you need it.

Arm and Monitor From Your Phone

Every system is set up for the Pyronix HomeControl+ app, with arm and disarm, status and instant alerts. For a coastal home or a business left empty overnight, you know the moment something is triggered.

Advice from someone who understands how break-ins happen

The reason our systems work is that they are designed around the offender, not the catalogue. That perspective comes from genuine experience.

Kris Hill, ITD Secure

Director and Lead Installer

Most alarm installers can tell you how a system works. Kris can tell you how a burglar thinks. With over 30 years across the security and law enforcement industries, locally in Kent and nationally, he surveys a property the way an intruder reads it: the unlit approach, the blind side, the door or window that no one watches. A sensor in the wrong place gives a false sense of security. A system zoned and placed correctly ends the matter.

Formal certification is not mandatory in security installation, so it is worth finding someone you can trust. Our track record is public: fully insured with public liability cover and a 5.0 star rating across our Google reviews from homes and businesses around Canterbury, with an installer who turns up, explains the plan before quoting and stands behind the work.

Speak to Kris directly on 07508 384864, or WhatsApp us. Ask how a monitored alarm and CCTV in Canterbury work together to cover a property inside and out, not just sound off after the event.

Trusted by Canterbury Businesses

Canterbury and the villages around it are home to some of the independent businesses we are proudest to protect. We are the preferred security installer for The Butcher of Brogdale, fitting and maintaining systems across their shops as the business grows across Kent. In Sturry alone we look after Peekaboo Playhouse and Café, Coffee Corner and Glossed, independent local businesses that trust ITD Secure with their alarm and CCTV protection. If you run a shop, café or clinic in Canterbury, you are in good company.

Call Kris on 07508 384864, or send a WhatsApp. A fair bit of what he fits never makes it onto this website, including discreet and covert systems for properties that have been targeted before or commercial theft by employee requiring sensitive solutions. Ask him what he would actually recommend for yours.

How much does a burglar or intruder alarm in Canterbury cost?

Every system is quoted after a free survey, because the right answer depends on the property and on what your insurer asks for. You get a fixed written price before any work starts and we never charge for a result we cannot deliver. The main things that move the cost are:

  • Number of zones and sensors. Driven by the entry points and rooms that need covering, not a fixed package size.
  • Wireless or wired. Wireless Pyronix fits most homes in a day with no mess, wired suits new builds and renovations.
  • Security grade. Grade 2 for most homes and shops, Grade 3 where a higher-risk site or an insurer requires it.
  • Monitoring. App alerts only, or full 24/7 keyholder and police response.
  • Pet-friendly detection. Pet-tolerant sensors so the dog or cat does not set the system off.

How a burglar and intruder alarm installation works with us

Every install follows the same process, because shortcuts are where weak systems come from:

  • Free survey. Kris walks the property, finds the real weak points and agrees exactly what each zone needs to cover.
  • System design. Sensor count, placement, zoning, grade and whether it is monitored are specified for your property, with a fixed written quote.
  • Clean installation. Wireless where it suits, tidy wired runs where it does not, a weatherproof external sounder and minimal disruption to the building.
  • Configuration. App control, user codes, notifications and any monitored response all set up and tested with you.
  • Aftercare. We show you how to arm and use it, leave clear guidance, and are on the end of the phone if anything needs adjusting.

FAQs

There is no fixed price because no two Canterbury properties are the same. A listed building inside the city walls and a family home out at Whitstable need very different systems. We survey the property, agree exactly what needs covering and give you a fixed written quote, free and with no obligation. Call Kris on 07508 384864.

Yes, and it is a lot of what we do in the city. We use fully wireless Pyronix systems so nothing is chased into walls or fixed to a historic frontage, which also keeps the install clean and quick. Where external consent is a consideration on a listed building we will work sympathetically and advise you on it as part of the survey.

Yes. We use pet-tolerant detectors that ignore movement below a set weight and height, so a cat or a medium dog moving around downstairs will not trigger a false alarm while the rest of the system stays fully active. We set these up for your specific pet and layout as part of the survey.

Yes, commercial work is a large part of what we do around Canterbury. We protect independent shops, cafes, clinics and offices across the city and out in Sturry and the villages, from a single unit to multi-site businesses, and can specify the grade your insurer requires with an optional 24/7 monitored response.

We service and maintain Pyronix systems and any alarm we have fitted across Canterbury. If you have inherited a different make we will not simply take it on blind, but Kris will give it a full system review and tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping or replacing.

Yes. Every system we install has a rechargeable backup battery that keeps it fully operational through a power cut, and wireless Pyronix systems continue to protect the property and send app alerts as normal. We check battery health at every service visit so it is never left to chance.
