The Medway conurbation is one of the most varied security areas we cover, because the five towns that run east along the river, Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham, each have a genuinely different character, and the Hoo Peninsula to the north is unlike any of them.

Rochester itself is the historic heart. The streets around the cathedral and castle, the Georgian terraces on Crow Lane and The Close, and the Victorian stock climbing Star Hill and Fort Pitt carry significant period properties, many listed or in conservation areas, where camera placement requires care and the cable runs on solid-walled buildings need more time. The High Street also carries substantial commercial footfall, and businesses in the city centre face the same out-of-hours break-in pattern as any busy Kent high street.

Chatham developed around the dockyard and carries a denser, more varied residential mix, Victorian and Edwardian streets near the town centre, 1960s and 70s estates further south, and the newer Waterfront and St Mary’s Island apartments where security requirements include communal entrance coverage and ICO-compliant corridor cameras. Gillingham and Rainham are predominantly inter-war and postwar semis, practical family housing where driveway coverage and rear garden access are the main residential concerns. Walderslade, Lordswood and Hempstead sit on the North Downs slope, family detached and semi-detached estates of the 1970s and 80s, well spread out with longer rear gardens and integral garages that create their own blind spots.

The Hoo Peninsula stands apart from all of it. Hoo St Werburgh, Cliffe, High Halstow, Allhallows and the island villages of Grain and Stoke are rural, low-traffic and sometimes genuinely remote. Properties here face the kind of targeted rural theft that the suburban estates on the other side of the A2 almost never see.

A real Rochester job

One of our recent installs, Period property, Rochester.

A Victorian terraced property near Fort Pitt had been broken into through the rear, via a shared back alley that runs behind a row of period houses and is invisible from the street. The owner had a doorbell camera on the front and nothing else. We surveyed the rear access, which in practice meant walking the alley from both ends to understand how it was read from outside, identified that two camera positions would cover the alley entry point and the rear gate, and quoted for a four-camera Hikvision system covering front approach, side passage, rear gate and the blind corner of the return extension where the back door sat. The installation went through the loft void to avoid surface cable runs on the original brickwork. The owner now has full coverage of the actual entry route rather than just the front of the house, and receives motion alerts the moment anything moves in the alley after dark.

What a great company. Kris had seen the issues we have faced multiple times and his advice and guidance was spot on. We were getting broken into at the back of the house in Rochester, due to access through a shared alley. Why Medway properties need CCTV

Medway is one of the most affordable commutable areas for London, which has driven strong population growth and a high density of rental and HMO properties, particularly in Chatham and Gillingham. Higher rental density brings both the specific security needs of shared-access properties and a higher turnover of occupants, which affects how front entrance and communal area cameras are specified and managed.

The risk breaks down clearly by area:

Rochester city centre and period streets. Victorian and Georgian terraces with shared rear alleys and limited side access. Rear alley entry is the consistent weak point on these streets, because the front of the property is often visible from the road while the back is not. Listed buildings and conservation area properties require extra care on camera placement and fixings.
Chatham, HMOs and rental properties. High density of shared houses and flats, particularly near the town centre and the university campus at Chatham Waterfront. Hoo Peninsula, Cliffe, High Halstow, Allhallows, Grain. Remote, low-traffic, rural and marshland properties where isolation is both the appeal and the vulnerability. Equipment, vehicles and fuel stored in outbuildings are the targets, approached on quiet lanes by people who have scouted in daylight. Coverage of the approach track and the outbuildings matters as much as the house itself.
Medway City Estate and riverside commercial. Industrial and commercial premises along the riverside corridor, where out-of-hours access, vehicle and plant security and perimeter coverage are the priorities.

How much does CCTV installation in Medway cost?

Every quote follows a free survey, because a Rochester period terrace, a Chatham HMO, a Walderslade family semi and a Hoo Peninsula farm require completely different systems. We give you a fixed written price before any work begins.

The main variables are:

Camera count. Set by entry points and blind spots at the survey, not a fixed package number.

FAQs

Do Rochester's period terraces need special consideration for CCTV installation?

Yes. Victorian and Georgian terraces in Rochester, particularly in conservation areas around the cathedral quarter, Star Hill and Fort Pitt, have solid brick walls, no cavity to run cables through, and in some cases listed building status where external fixings require consent. We account for all of this in the survey: routing cable through the loft void or under floors where possible, avoiding surface runs on original brickwork, and checking with Medway Council on any listed building consent required before starting. The camera positioning on these properties also needs to account for the rear alley access that most Victorian terraces share, which is typically the entry route that a standard front-of-house camera does not cover.

Can you install CCTV in a Chatham or Gillingham HMO or shared house?

Yes, and we do a significant amount of this work across Chatham and Gillingham. HMOs and shared houses have specific obligations under ICO guidance around communal area cameras, signage, footage retention periods and who has access to recordings. Cameras in communal entrances, stairwells and external areas are appropriate and expected by insurers; cameras that could capture private living spaces are not. We advise on compliant placement and retention settings as part of every survey, so the system satisfies both the insurer and the ICO from day one.

Do you cover rural and isolated properties on the Hoo Peninsula?

Yes. The Hoo Peninsula, including Hoo St Werburgh, Cliffe, High Halstow, Allhallows, Grain and Stoke, is some of the most genuinely remote property we cover in Kent. The isolation that makes it attractive is also what makes it a target: low traffic means an approach on a quiet lane goes unnoticed, and outbuildings with equipment and fuel can sit empty for extended periods without anyone passing. We survey these properties the same way we survey rural properties in the Weald: from the approach in, covering the gate and the outbuildings before the main house. The system records locally to an NVR so footage is never lost if the broadband drops, which matters on the peninsula.

How many cameras does a Rochester or Medway property actually need?

It depends entirely on the property. A Victorian terrace in Rochester with a rear alley typically needs four cameras: front approach, side passage entry, rear alley gate and the back door. A semi-detached in Gillingham or Rainham is usually covered by three, front, the gap between properties and the rear garden. A Walderslade or Hempstead detached with an integral garage needs an additional camera on the garage side, because that blind corner is where the entry is made.
